Pura Vida! We’re returning to Costa Rica in 2014. Amazing waves, beautiful beaches, tropical wildlife, good food – we know this is going to be the trip of a lifetime!

- Ability: All abilities welcome, from new bodyboarders to shredder
We want to introduce you to the beautiful country of Costa Rica. Our destination, Santa Teresa was a well-kept secret for many years, due to the difficulty of travelling to the area. The consistent beach breaks and point breaks in the area offer a fun park for bodyboarders of all abilities.
From beginners to the experienced, Playa Carmen and Santa Teresa has waves for everyone. For the quality of the waves, the crowds are absolutely minimal, the way of life is mellow and the environment is truly breathtaking. Voted by Forbes magazine to be some of the most spectacular in the world, Santa Teresa’s beaches are known throughout Costa Rica as the best of the best.
We’d like to share this find as the most consistent beachbreak that we’ve discovered with offshore winds that you can set your watch by. Costa Rica’s catch phrase is ‘Pura-Vida’ which when translated means ‘Pure-Life’. There’s no better way to describe the place.
The best time to escape!
In the depth of the northern hemisphere winter there is no other place that you would want to be. For the months of January and February the guaranteed sunshine and swell take a lot of beating. Strictly shorts or bikini’s in the bath like water, beautiful restaurants on the beach and sunsets to die for.
See our 2012 trip in ThreeSixty Magazine
We will be visiting during the dry season months. The climate in this region is among the driest in the country. The weather in Playa Santa Teresa is very predictable, constant sun! There are consistently high temperatures and very little rain. You are almost assured perfect weather.
Just 200 metres from the warm waters and white sand beaches of the Pacific Ocean, your accommodation is a unique, local-inspired guest house, apartments, swimming and restaurant. Large room (2 floors) with 8 individual beds 4 downstairs and 4 upstairs, no separate rooms, bathroom and shower which is partially open to the sky, small kitchenette, fridge and spacious veranda with hammock. Perfect place for a group of friends. There is also separate bungalows for couples and a separate room of four to share.
There’s also a yoga area on the second floor, a spa in the gardens with massages available and a restaurant with a varied and well priced menu. There is also a supermarket 100 metres from the apartment.
The cost of the trip is £689. Payment can be made in full immediately or by a £100 deposit immediately, with an agreed payment plan, please call our email us to discuss.
(card payment incurs an additional 2% charge – so we suggest you make an online transfer to our account). Please check out our terms and conditions
Our host will supply the following:
- 7 nights accommodation in Santa Teresa.
- 2 nights accommodation in San Jose upon arrival and before departure.
Rob Barber’s Bodyboarding School will supply the following:
- Tuition tailored to your ability from British Senior Champ and British team coach, Rob Barber.
- Video analysis to help you improve double fast!
- Photography of you ripping (not included in the price but just buy the shots that you want or get a disc full for approx £20).
- Airport arrival and departure meetings.
The trip includes arrival and departure meetings to/from San Jose. You will need to book your own flights from the UK, however we can advise you on flights that others are taking, the latest deals that we have discovered, and recommended booking agents.
Your flights should ensure that you are in San Jose, Costa Rica on January 24th and flying out at the earliest on the evening of 1st February, 2014.
Please ensure that if you have a stop (if you are flying from Europe this will often be in New York, Miami or Atlanta) you have sufficient time to make your connection and allow for short delays. Best to book a ticket that sees your baggage transited all the way to San Jose if possible.
Please check your baggage, size, number and weight allowance with your airline. Remember to check your airlines’ procedure for carrying bodyboards and book yours in advance if you need to.
On the day that you travel please keep your mobile phone on (except when flying of course) so that we can stay in touch in case of delays, flight changes etc.
If you could drop me a text (07974729639) from the airport to say that you are on time/delayed/early, that would be a great help.
What is there to do in Santa Teresa other than bodyboard some of the best waves available?
Food & Drink
You will notice that the food in Santa Teresa tastes amazing regardless of the price ($10USD for a good meal), since many surf-loving chefs have moved there from around the world, and have created their own restaurants to support their beach lifestyle.
As well as the great menu at the restaurant within our accommodation there is a fantastic range of fish restaurants, beach BBQs, Argentinean steak restaurants and some fantastic vegetarian options.
Bring US Dollars or the local currency Colones. Many bars and restaurants take international credit cards. We recommend taking at least 2 bank cards in case one becomes lost or damaged. The cashpoints sometimes become empty at the weekend and there are often large ques to use the two banks in the town so we recommend that you plan your spending to avoid too many visits to the bank.
UK Citizens do not need a visa to enter Costa Rica but you must have a valid passport with an expiration date greater than 30 days. You must also have a pre-paid airline ticket to exit Costa Rica.
It is essential to check with your own international travel requirements for your nationality.
When you depart Costa Rica you must pay a departure tax of $28 USD. If you are travelling through the United States you will be required to fill in an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) form and pay $14USD. This is done online and takes 5 minutes.
You then print the final screen and travel with it in your passport.
It is a good idea to carry photocopies of your important documents (packed separately) and note that it is also easier to carry photocopies of relevant pages from heavy guidebooks etc.
We also suggest that you scan copies of your important documents and email them to yourself.
Our brainstorm of packing essentials to get you started.. (Remember you get a discount at the Bodyboard-Depot.com if you buy anything leading up to your trip and we have an unrivalled knowledge of the kit that works best in the Costa Rican climate! We can advise you on the specifics of the best kit required for this location)
Finserts: In order to stop fin rubs and also to save you needing to wear your full fin socks in the warm waters we designed Finserts, they are an excellent way to avoid fin rubs:http://www.bodyboard-depot.com/Bodyboard-Depot+Finserts/0_CAAA050/PRAA299.htm
Heel Shields: Bodyboard-Depot Heel Shields protect your ankles and the back of your heel: http://www.bodyboard-depot.com/Bodyboard+Depot+Heel+Shields/0_CAAA038/PRAA298.htm
Leashes: With no local shops, a broken leash in Nicaragua can mean a lot of swimming! Check out our range here:http://www.bodyboard-depot.com/leashes/0_CAAA024.htm
Fin Strings: again, better to be safe than sorry! http://www.bodyboard-depot.com/NMD+FIN+SAVERS/0_CAAA002/PRAA079.htm
Board Bag: A boardbag to keep all of your kit safely protected through out your journey – the more padding the better! http://www.bodyboard-depot.com/board+bags/0_CAAA007.htm
Shorts and Rashvests: The water temperature in Santa Teresa is 30 degrees Celsius (according to Magic Seaweed). It’s important to invest in at least one pair of good quality, light weight, stretchy board shorts to wear on the trip. The best brands that I’ve come across have been O’Neill Hyper freak and Hurley Phantom. Please call us if you would like advice about where to buy the best board shorts and what to look for in the pair that you go for. We can source excellent lycra rash vests from brands like Xcel at un beatable prices so please drop us an email or give me a call with your needs.
First Aid Kit: Your personal first Aid kit should be well stocked for the trip. Drawing on 20 years of bodyboard travel experience I have collected all of the bodyboarding trip essentials in to one pack which works out cheaper than the competitors on the market. http://www.bodyboard-depot.com/Bodyboarders+First+Aid+Kit/0_CAAA063/PRAA300…
High Powered Sunscreen for Bodyboarding: It’s essential to stay protected from the equatorial sun during the trip. We’ve tried most of the sunscreen on the market and Island Tribe stays on and doesn’t go in your eyes like a lot of its competitors. http://goo.gl/cVDjm
Surf Hat: Maximise your surf time by keeping the sun off your head. Please purchase one of these if you have a shaved head or find that you suffer from adverse affects from the sun. We promise it will make for a better trip for you. http://www.bodyboard-depot.com/OCEAN+AND+EARTH+SURF+HAT/0_CAAA034/PRAA285.h…
Bodyboard For Costa Rica: Due to the warm water temperatures in Costa Rica we would recommend a fairly new PP or 3D core bodyboard as the stiffness of the core in the warm water will be essential. If you have an older board that you are planning to take with you then please call us for our opinion so that we can discuss it. In my experience it is too warm for a PE core in Central America.

A radical change in temperature and diet affects people differently. Maintain a good water intake and a healthy diet. Carry immodium or similar in your medical kit alongside your rehydration sachets.

Another beautiful part of the world visited with Barber’s Coaching Holiday’s. Excellent coaching as always with new instructor Gaz flawlessly fittings into Aidan’s big sandals. What more could you want when it’s cold and miserable back home? Scorchio weather, warm consistent surf, great company and a chance to progress. Could not recommend these holiday’s enough.
ASH HUGHES – about Bodyboard Holidays, 07/02/13
Another brilliant trip run by Rob and his crew. Amazing setting for a great 10 days of surfing. Great advice and coaching from Rob and Gaz and good fun night life. A welcome break from freezing cold water at home…nothing beats surfing in just your boardies.
