Mentawai Island Bodyboard Holiday | The World’s most Perfect Waves Await
Ability: Bodyboarders need to have attended at least one trip with us before as the Mentawai Islands are fun but more challenging. Experienced bodyboarders are more than welcome.
This trip has been two years in the making but we’ve been determined to get it right. The monumental task to bring it to fruition however has ended, the result is a premium bodyboarding trip perfect for the more intrepid and adventurous booger.
We’re sailing between tropical Sumatran Islands to catch the finest waves in the world.
If you’re an experienced traveller and bodyboarder, this is the trip you’ve been working towards. First pioneered in 1975 by Australian Surfers, the exotic Mentawai island chain is packed with amazing waves and the opportunity for exploration so be prepared for the unexpected.
You’ll be climbing in and out of numerous boats, clambering river banks and crossing high gullies to reach our beach front surf camp. Once there we’ll be checking out set ups on different wind directions, swell directions and having an amazing adventure.
At the fringes of the Sumatran jungle we’ll be travelling by boat each day to numerous waves running along the edge of Mentawai’s archipelago, you’ll encounter simple island life and off the beaten track travel.
Ground swells are consistent during October and the variety of waves available means crowds are easily avoided. Winds are usually light at this time of year too so it’s guaranteed to be offshore somewhere every day. Wherever it’s on, we’ll be there.
If you feel comfortable in line ups, riding hollow and barrelling waves and surfing with an experienced pack, this holiday was designed for you. We’ll have an awesome time going with the flow with a plan but no fixed schedule.
Join us. See for yourself why experienced surfers and bodyboarders alike travel so far for waves that are second to none. The Mentawai Islands offer a booger paradise unlike any other you’ve ever known.
We’ve chosen an area of the Mentawai Islands that boasts over 20 breaks within a 45 minute boat ride from our surf camp. As well as the long left-hand running almond-shaped barrels Indonesia is famed for, there are shorter wedging peaks, fast hollow waves and fuller, deeper waves. On the right day you’ll get the longest tube ride of your life.
Within 5 – 20 minutes from the camp, travelling by boat, nearby waves include Beng Beng, E Bay, Pit Stops, Good Times, A Frames, Hideaways and Bank Vaults. They offer a great variety of set ups and levels of intensity.
We visit during the back end of the dry season so expect warm, sunny weather and to spend most of the time wearing few clothes. Its board shorts, Lycra vests and sunscreen only in the water. There could be occasional light rain. Sea temperatures remain steady at around 28°C or 82°F.
Our surf camp is located in a beautiful protected bay where our boats are moored, right outside. Fashioned in the style of traditional Mentawai Uma, the accommodation is simple yet stunning and of a clean, safe and basic standard, perfect for resting up and relaxing in between bodyboarding sessions. Within the camp you can also pay to have a massage while overlooking the ocean, the ideal antidote for loosening muscles after a day in the water.
The coaching team offer daily tuition tailored to your ability with coaches that are qualified and fully insured. Experienced lifeguards, some have twenty years of surfing experience and fifteen years of worldwide travel experience all staff are trained by British team coach, Rob Barber. Intermediate and advanced level coaching is tailored towards the individual.
