California Road Trip | The American Dream
Ability: All abilities welcome from new bodyboarders to experienced shredders.
The American Bodyboarding dream; live the laidback healthy beach lifestyle of Southern California while scoring insane waves along the famous Pacific Coast Highway from La Jolla, Encinitas and Oceanside in the South to San Clemente, Huntington and Newport in the North.
We have listened to our customers and California is their dream destination. We are excited to announce our latest and most eagerly awaited Bodyboard Holiday, the California Road Trip!
This November, we’re heading to Southern California for a well-rounded experience of the iconic surf scene and relaxed beach vibe this area is so famed for, while scoring amazing waves. The autumn is prime season there; the swell is consistent, the climate Mediterranean, and the prevailing Santa Ana wind continually whistles offshore. Throw in an endless list of spots that proves impossible to remember and we’re confident you’ll experience the boogie trip of a lifetime!
Even if it’s your first time to California, driving along the legendary Pacific Coast Highway will seem somehow familiar as you recognise countless famous breaks that have appeared in surf magazines and movies since the 60s. While travelling on this highway you’ll also wonder whether its architect was a surfer. The road runs parallel to the coast passing long stretches of pristine sandy beaches dotted with Baywatch style lookout towers and conveniently interrupted by breakwalls, piers, reefs and picturesque headlands that create an abundance of surfing potential.
We’ll be basing ourselves in Encinitas, a vibrant and authentic beach town, 25 miles North of San Diego. This quintessential Californian surf city offers an eclectic mix of 60s inspired beach culture combined with unique boutique shopping, side walk cafes serving Açai & Granola breakfast bowls with Chai lattes to go, and pop-up eateries that double up as yoga studios. Encinitas strikes the perfect balance between laidback beach vibe and casual sophistication. So it comes as no surprise that National Geographic recently named it among the 20 best surf towns in the world!
The people here wear their surf history proudly and when the waves are pumping, which incidentally is quite often, the whole city seems to be infected with an excitement that is contagious. It’s no wonder the residents of Encinitas are regarded as the happiest and friendliest in the States. And friendliness is not their only attribute! I’m sure when God was giving away good looks, Californians were first in line.
If the variety of hotties, hunks and quality surf spots wasn’t enough, California’s clean living lifestyle means the variety of healthy eating options is mind-boggling; from light breakfast bagels and green power smoothies to protein filled fish tacos and avocado burritos. California also has a thriving microbrewery scene offering a host of must try organic craft beers.
After a day of scoring sick waves, nothing beats a classic Cali burrito washed down with a cool craft beer whilst watching an epic Californian sunset!
I grew up watching the cult bodyboarding movie The Inside. Directed by Scott Carter, and filmed predominantly in California, the film exposes what an insane area it is for bodyboarding. You can find almost any wave type in here, from the awesome reefs of La Jolla, the left hand wedges of Black’s, the fun beach breaks of San Clemente and Oceanside, to the iconic Huntington pier and the notorious Newport wedge, and not to mention all the secret spots in between. The toughest decision we’ll have each day is deciding whether to drive North or South along this surf rich coastline.
Southern California is famed for its eternally Spring like climate, it’s never too hot nor too cold. In autumn, the average outside temperature is 20°C while the water is an inviting 18°C, so a 3/2mm will more than suffice. With such a great climate, Southern California is the ideal destination to escape the short grey dreary days synonymous with November in the UK.
Nestled right in the heart of Encinitas, our surf inspired boutique house is located just 50metres from the beach and trendy local cafes where we head each morning for a surf check and breakfast. The house is freshly refurbished and perfectly geared toward the travelling booger. There are single, twin, double and quad rooms that all come with modern furnishings and a walk in shower. À la mode restaurants, eateries, bars, organic grocery stores and a vibrant nightlife are all within walking distance of the house. It’s the ultimate place to soak up the South Californian vibe. The package price is based on sharing a room with one, two or three people. If you need a double room (as you are a couple) or you want a room on your own the price will be increased. There is limited availability on double and single rooms so please contact us asap with your request.
